A sea of plastic spreads floating in water, streets and gardens littered with plastic bottles, food wrappers and garbage dump at every nook and corner make for common sight in urban setting these days. And the theme for this year’s World Environment Day – ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ – couldn’t have been more fitting.
One can’t deny that plastic has many uses, and our dependence on disposable plastic is proof of the fact. But hardly do we realise that this dependence is a toxic one, literally! The plastic waste that ends up in our oceans can last for up to 1,000 years before it completely breaks down, and can circle the earth four times in one year. One-third of this waste doesn’t even get collected and it ends up clogging our drains and polluting the environment.
With plastic making up 10% of the total waste generated, half of it used is disposable. This presents a major problem as plastic is non-renewable and manufacturing and destroying it exposes individuals and the environment to deadly toxins, including carcinogens.
Taking note of this pressing issue, the United Nations has urged governments and organisations to come up with sustainable alternatives to this menace.
While technology is often blamed for harming the environment, sustainable and wise of technological innovations can actually be our saviours. Wondering how? Digital companies such as e-wallets, money transfer services among others, have a huge part to play, as they enable electronic record-keeping and virtual movement of money, thereby reducing dependence on trees and plastic.
What nature is telling us is that the solution to our problem lies in the problem itself. So, this World Environment Day, InstaReM pledges to reduce its plastic footprint and #DoMore for the planet.
