The Moroccan Dirham (MAD) is the official currency of Morocco and the disputed territory of Western Sahara. It is issued by Bank Al-Maghrib, the central bank of Morocco. Introduced in 1960, replacing the Moroccan franc, the dirham has become the country's standard monetary unit. The dirham is further subdivided into 100 centimes. While the currency is officially restricted from being taken out of Morocco, it is commonly exchanged in international markets. The Moroccan Dirham is widely used for trade, tourism, and remittances, reflecting Morocco’s vibrant economic connections with Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
