The Burundian Franc (BIF) is the official currency of Burundi, issued by the Bank of the Republic of Burundi. It was introduced in 1964, replacing the Rwandan and Burundi Franc following Burundi’s independence. The franc is a free-floating currency, but its exchange rate is heavily influenced by government policies and economic instability. Burundi has a predominantly agricultural economy, and the BIF has experienced inflation and depreciation over the years. The franc is subdivided into 100 centimes, though centime coins are no longer in circulation due to inflation. Banknotes range from BIF 500 to BIF 10,000, while coins exist in values from BIF 1 to BIF 50.
